Custom Boat Kits

Share this post TFUPM Posted March 18, 2013

We are in full swing with our custom boat kits.  Possibilities are almost endless, and the process for getting a kit made for your boat is really simple.

There are 40+ colors and lots of patterns to choose from as well as multiple material types, densities and thicknesses.

If you always wanted foot chocks in your boat to keep you and the crew hiking hard, we can build those for you.  If your knees and back are sore after a long day driving, no problem, let us build you a custom helm pad.  Need a soft place to sit on the deck that is light weight and won't slide out from under your feet?  We have a solution for that as well.

Want the name of your boat, or your company in your Soft Deck, we can take care of ya.

If you got any questions give us a call or email.

Department of Homeland Security: HPEAFS Shock Mitigating Deck Kit For Midnight Interceptors

Share this post TFUPM Posted November 19, 2012

These are a couple of versions of a partial deck coverings that we have done for the Department of Homeland Security for their Midnight Interceptor boats with out HPEAFS.  These kits are designed basically like overgrown helm pads and fit on either side of the console, and provide a shock mitigating floor around the bolsters.  Which are all the areas the crew stands while underway.

Shocking Fact

Share this post TFUPM Posted November 13, 2012

A 1995 study by Gollwitzer and Peterson entitled "Repeated water entry shocks on high-speed planning boats" showed that during operation vertical acceleration forces of up to 10g had been recorded.

Take the weight of the average male in the US at 178 pounds and you get a force of 1,780 pounds impacting that individual through the deck of that boat at 10g's.  Lets give that some perspective...the world record for a bare squat as of the writing of this article is 1000 pounds and is held by Robert Wilkerson pictured below with 1000 pounds on the bar (link).

Now lets analyze an impact that is just half that magnitude.  A 5g force on the same 178 pound individual will product a force of 890 pounds on that individual's feet, knees and back.

The idea of even trying to hold that much weight on back when you are ready for it is a daunting enough thought.  But that is the kind of forces that can be imposed upon your body when traveling at relatively high speeds in rough water.

Food for thought...

HPEAFS: Before and After on SPAWAR Boat

Share this post TFUPM Posted November 12, 2012

Below are some pictures of our HPEAFS (High-Performance, Energy-Absorbing Flooring System) on one of the Navy's Marine Mammal boats.

This shock mitigating flooring system makes for a comfortable yet stable surface for the crew to stand and work on during long days at sea.  And it helps protect the mammals while underway by reducing the amount of impact and vibration transferred to them.

It is ultra light weight and can be quickly and easily removed and re-installed as needed.  Plus, it is completely waterproof.  These are really important factors on a boat that transports mammals that need to be kept wet and it makes it easy to clean up the mess that goes with them.

Product Updates Across The Board!

Share this post TFUPM Posted November 07, 2012

Major product updates are coming to Soft Deck's general boating line.   Over the next several weeks, the material previously used only for our "commercial grade molded diamond" products will now be used across the entire boating line (with the exception of our Sabot kits.)  The benefits are that our customers will get a more durable longer lasting product.  The short term negatives are that we will have a more limited color selection for a while.

Not to fear though, the cut diamond, straight cut, and square cut (in all 50+ color combinations) that many of you have come to know and love will still be available as a special order.

What is "Shock Mitigation" and what does it mean for boaters?

Share this post TFUPM Posted November 07, 2012

Shock Mitigation is a term that has become a buzzword to describe methods of reducing the impact or shock that is transmitted to the crew and passengers of a craft when that craft's hull impacts a wave at a relatively high rate of speed.

This is a topic that has been studied extensively by the US Military for years because of the danger it poses to those on board.  "The Navy and the boating industry as a whole have long known of the potential for acute injury to personnel operating high-speed boats in relatively rough seas. Even low speed operations of these boats can result in serious injury due to the violent manner in which the boats respond to the seas." (Analysis and Mitigation ofMechanical Shock Effects on High Speed Planing Boats, Kearns 2001)

So what does this really mean for the general boating world?

In short, the dangers faced by military personnel are not all that different from those faced by...say a fisherman operation a center console fishing boat.  The pictures below don't look all that different.

Most of us in the recreational boating wold stand at the helm while driving fast in a heavy sea state, and so we "mitigate" the shock that is felt from impacting waves by simply bending our knees and absorbing the impact.  The only other option besides standing to absorb the impact is with a full suspension seating system.   The one pictured below is from UllmanDynamics.com.

And while full suspension seating is a great option, it is often times impractical for the general boating world, especially if we are talking about multiple crew members or guests.

Jockey seats have become popular especially in the RHIB world.  They allow the driver to easily transition from sitting to standing when needed.

And we have bolster seats which fold down to again allow operator and passengers to absorb the impact with their body's own suspensions system.

All of these options that require standing to absorb the impact generated from a hard hit have the same problem, they are requiring you to do all the work of absorbing that impact.

That is why we at here at Soft Deck developed our High-Performance, Energy-Absorbing Flooring System or HPEAFS for short.  The HPEAFS provides 1.25" of shock mitigating padding that can be installed over the entire deck, (like most of our Navy boats require) as a partial deck covering, or simply as smaller helm pads.

Introducing Soft Deck's High-Performance, Energy-Absorbing Flooring System (HPEAFS)

Share this post TFUPM Posted November 06, 2012

Soft-Deck, INC. is proud to introduce their (patent pending) High-Performance, Energy-Absorbing Flooring System (HPEAFS).  Originally designed for use on high speed military craft, (currently in use by the US Navy, Border Patrol, Homeland Security, Sheriff's Office) we are now offering our flooring system to the public. Designed to reduce injury, and fatigue to operators and passengers on high speed craft by absorbing vibration and mitigating the impact felt as a result of pounding at high speed. This flooring system also greatly increases the operator and crews comfort aboard the vessel. And in the event of a slip and fall, the Flooring System will reduce the likelihood of injury.

Weighing in at less than 1 pound per square foot, Soft-Deck's HPEAFS can be installed rail to rail without negatively affecting performance of the vessel, and it can be easily removed and re-installed by one person in a matter of seconds. It is completely waterproof and positively buoyant so it will not increase in weight when wet.

The Flooring System secures to the deck using a innovative fasteners from 3M that adhered to your boat's deck and have a complimentary piece on the Flooring System. This makes it very easy to install and remove as needed. And installation of the fasteners from 3M can be as simple as peeling and sticking.

Our mechanical joint used for locking pieces together ensures there will be no gaps between the panels of our HPEAFS.

Our High-Performance, Energy-Absorb Flooring System can be purchased as a custom boat kit made to your specifications and ready to install, or the components can be purchased by the square foot.

All custom kits go through a 3 part process to ensure you get a kit that fits exactly right the first time.

Please email us for ordering and more information. HPEAFS page
